Portugal was finished at Round 16 after defeated by the eventual champions Spain. In group stages they were pooled with Brazil, Ivory Coast and North Korea. The group later on knows as group of death in FIFA World Cup 2010 however Portugal managed to qualify to next round when finished second behind Brazil.
Portugal glimpsed to round 16 when trashed North Korea in vast scored 7-0 after poor performance in their first game with Ivory Coast when draws goalless. Final games in Group G they only draw with Brazil and it was enough going through round 16. However in round 16 they end up their fortune when vanished to Spain 1-0.
Portugal had eligible to South Africa by play off matches with beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in aggregated. Before that they finished second in Group 2 of Europe qualifiers stages behind Denmark with differences of two points. Their top scorers in qualifiers were Simao Sabrosa and Nani with four and three goals respectively. Conversely their regular players during qualifiers were Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho, Raul Meireles, Deco, Nani and Simoa Sabrosa had played over 10 matches.
During FIFA World Cup 2010 Portugal ironically only managed to score 7 goals against North Korea and concede 1 goal to Spain in Round 16. Tiago become their top scorer when scored two goals even though he not scores any goal in qualifiers stages.
It was fifth appearances in FIFA World cup after third consecutive time. Their best achievement was back to FIFA World Cup 1966 when finished third and Eusebio was top scorer of the tournament with nine goals. They had to wait about 20 years to appearance back in FIFA World Cup 1986 but only finished round 1. Started FIFA World Cup 2002 they managed to qualify consecutive for three times until this years. In mean time their greatest success was finished fourth in FIFA World Cup 2006.
